About NeuroAbantu

A practice built from the community, for the community

Founded in South Africa, NeuroAbantu was born from over a decade of working alongside neurodivergent children and their families across home, school, and centre settings. My practice blends Ubuntu philosophy with the latest neurodiversity-affirming evidence — creating support that feels culturally real, not imported.

My Story

Behind NeuroAbantu

A decade of showing up for children and families — and the belief that every mind deserves to be met with understanding.

About Annah

More than a decade of showing up

I'm Annah Moshatama — an Autism & Neurodiversity Consultant with over ten years of hands-on experience walking alongside neurodivergent children and the families, educators, and professionals who love and support them.

"It takes a village to raise a child." — African proverb

For neurodivergent children, that village is everything. When families, educators, therapists, and communities come together with awareness, acceptance, and inclusive practices — children don't just survive. They belong. They thrive.

At NeuroAbantu, building that village is the work. Because every child deserves a community that understands them.

My work spans home, school, and centre settings — collaborating with Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychologists, and classroom teachers to build support that is consistent, meaningful, and grounded in each child's unique strengths.

NeuroAbantu is the practice I always wished existed — culturally grounded, neurodiversity-affirming, and built for South African families. It is rooted in Ubuntu because I believe, deeply, that no child thrives alone.

What I Stand For

The values that guide every session

🌱

Strengths First, Always

I begin every assessment, every session, and every conversation by looking for what a child can do — not what they can't. Strength is the foundation everything else is built on.

🤝

Families are Partners

Parents and caregivers are not recipients of advice — they are co-creators of support. You know your child best. My role is to walk alongside you, not in front of you.

🌍

Culturally Grounded

Support that doesn't speak your language — literally or culturally — isn't really support. NeuroAbantu is built for South African children, in South African contexts, with South African hearts.

💛

Child-Led Practice

Every plan, every strategy, every resource begins with the child. Their preferences, their pace, their communication style — these are not obstacles. They are the guide.

🔬

Evidence-Based

I stay current with neurodiversity research and apply what the evidence actually says — not what tradition assumes. That means continuously learning and adapting my practice.

🌿

Whole-Person Thinking

A child is never just a diagnosis. I hold the full picture — sensory, emotional, relational, environmental — when thinking about how to support them well.

The Ubuntu Foundation

Why Ubuntu is at the heart of everything

Ubuntu is not just a philosophy — it is a way of being. In the context of neurodiversity support, it reminds us that a child's flourishing is inseparable from the flourishing of the community around them. Parents, educators, and professionals don't support children in isolation. We do it together.

This is why NeuroAbantu never works with a child alone. The work is always relational — always with family, always with community, always with care.

"Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu"
isiZulu · Nguni Bantu philosophy
"A person is a person through other people." — This ancient wisdom is the foundation of NeuroAbantu. No child grows alone. No family should navigate this journey alone either.
How I Work

My approach in practice

Every family I work with receives something tailored — not a template. There are principles that guide every engagement I take on.

01

Listen before anything else

I never arrive with a plan. I arrive with questions. Every family's story is different, and I need to understand yours before I can be genuinely useful to you.

02

Understand the whole child

Behaviour, sensory needs, communication, environment, relationships — I look at everything. A child's challenges rarely live in one place.

03

Build alongside, not above

I work with families, educators, and professionals — not for them. The best outcomes happen when everyone around a child is moving in the same direction.

04

Reflect and adapt continuously

Children grow. Needs change. I stay connected, check in regularly, and adjust the support as your child — and your family — evolves.

📋

An important note about diagnosis

I am a Autism & Neurodiversity Consultant — I do not diagnose. Formal diagnosis is the role of a qualified Psychologist, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist. What I do is work alongside your child and family — before, during, or after a diagnosis — providing practical, affirming support at every stage. Where a formal assessment is needed, I will refer you to the right professional. You will always know clearly where I can help, and where to go for what I cannot provide.

🔍

Common Questions

Things people often ask

No — and it's important to me that this is clear. I am a Autism & Neurodiversity Consultant, not a Psychologist, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist. Formal diagnosis must come from a qualified medical or psychological professional. What I do is provide practical, affirming support — before, during, or long after a diagnosis. If I believe a formal assessment would be helpful for your child, I will tell you honestly and refer you to the right person. You will never be left wondering where my role ends and where someone else's begins.

No — and this matters to me. Many of the children I work with are pre-diagnosis, in the assessment process, or never receive a formal diagnosis. I work with what I observe and what you share with me, not with a label.

Because a number without context isn't useful — and can be misleading. Fees depend on the service, the setting, and sometimes the family's circumstances. I'd rather have a real conversation about what's right for you than have you make a decision based on a number on a page. All fees are agreed clearly and in writing before we begin.

Absolutely — and many families do exactly that. The guides are a great way to start building your understanding and confidence, and they often make our direct sessions richer because you arrive already familiar with some of the concepts.

Currently the guides are available in English. Translations into isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, and Afrikaans are in development. If you'd like to be notified when your language becomes available, get in touch via the contact page and I will notify you when your language becomes available.

Guides are licensed for personal or professional use only and may not be redistributed, resold, or shared as your own work. They are protected under the NeuroAbantu trademark and South African copyright law. If you'd like multiple copies for a school or organisation, please get in touch — I offer institutional licensing.
